Copystand

Today's key word is 複写台 【ふくしゃだい】, or copystand. Let's break the word down:

- 複写 means to copy or duplicate.
- 台 means a stand, rack, table, bench, etc.

The mistranslation I came across today was, "copying table." Not being familiar with copystands in general, I originally thought the author was talking about a copy machine or copier. Since the term was being used in the context of cameras and lenses, I did a quick search at the Nikon website and found "copystand."

Further research revealed some authors spelling the term as two words, "copy stand," and some as one word, "copystand." Since the document was related to the use of a copystand in conducting analysis of machine components, I deferred to the spelling used on page 421 of an American Society for Metals (ASM) International publication, "ASM Handbook Volume 11 Failure analysis and prevention‎."

Thus, I suggest authors use "copystand" when translating the word 複写代.
