Received High-Reputation

Today's Phrase:
  • 市場から高い評価をいただいてきました
Let's break it down:
  • 市場 【しじょう】 market
  • 高い 【たかい】 high
  • 評価 【ひょうか】 assessment
  • いただいてきま receive
One mistranslation that I have seen for the above phrase is "received high-reputation from the market." The major problem with this translation is "received."

The Japanese maker of gadget A did not actually "receive" a reputation from the marketplace. Use "receive" for something tangible. For example:
  • I received 100 dollars as a birthday present from my uncle.
  • おじさんから誕生日プレゼントとして100ドルをもらいました。
I would suggest that the translator/author use a different verb for "received." Here are a few suggestions:
  • (Company A) continues to enjoy a favorable reputation in the marketplace.
  • Our company enjoys a favorable reputation in the marketplace.
  • Our xyz gadget has a good reputation in the marketplace.
More examples of using 市場から~評価を~:
  • a good reputation in the marketplace as being honest and honorable
  • a solid reputation in the marketplace
  • an unsurpassed reputation in the marketplace
  • have a poor reputation in the marketplace
  • managing our reputation in the marketplace will optimize our ability to achieve
  • an outstanding reputation in the marketplace leads to long-term success
  • has an excellent reputation in the marketplace
  • maintaining a reputation in the marketplace
  • branding can increase profitability and improve ~ products’ reputation in the marketplace
  • continues to grow and its reputation in the marketplace
  • a sound reputation in the marketplace
  • can better leverage reputation in the marketplace
  • fine reputation in the marketplace
  • poor safety compliance could cause loss of reputation in the marketplace

  1. It would perhaps be acceptable to say "Company A has earned a reputation for producing high quality gadgets".

A reputation cannot be "received", but I guess it can be "earned".
